James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes was the sidekick of Captain America during WWII. He was thought to have died when he got stuck to a drone plane that exploded over the north Atlantic ocean during a mission with Cap.

The Russian military recovered his body from the icy waters, revived and brainwashed him, gave him a cybernetic arm, and turned him into the Winter Soldier - a covert assassin who shaped history and the Marvel Universe through his deadly missions.

Eventually, Cap was able to return his memories to him through the use of the cosmic cube. After Steve's death, Bucky took up the mantle of Captain America, and continued to wield the shield after Steve's return.

After seemingly being killed by Sin, the Red Skull's daughter, Bucky is once again the Winter Soldier, working in the shadows to right the wrongs he committed as a brainwashed pawn.
